Getting the Best Production Results

Since Motorola conceived Six Sigma more than 20 years ago in 1985, the program has gone forward from a metric system used to measure product quality to a management philosophy. Wonderful ideas developed in many companies all around the world have been embraced. Basically put in simple termsSix Sigma is a set of tools and strategies for process improvement originally established by Motorola. It came to be well known after Jack Welch made it a central focus of his business strategy at General Electric in 1995. Today Six Sigma is used in different sectors of industry.

Mechanism
What Six Sigma does is that it seeks to improve the value of process outputs by identifying and removing the causes of defects and errors. It also minimizes variability in manufacturing and business processes. It bring into play a set of quality management methods, including statistical methods, and forms a special infrastructure of people within the organization, with titles like Champions, Black Belts, Green Belts, Orange Belts, and son and so forth, who are experts in the very complex methods. Each Six Sigma project carried out within an organization abides by ASQ Certifications a defined sequence of steps and has quantified financial targets mainly cost reduction and/or profit increase.

Origin
So where did Six Sigma spring form? This term actuallystemmed from terminology associated with manufacturing, particularly terms linked to statistical modeling of the manufacturing processes. Through this system the maturity of any manufacturing process can be illustrated by a sigma rating indicating its yield or the percentage of defect-free products it creates. A six sigma CSSBB Certification process is one in which 99.99966% of the products manufactured are statistically expected to be free of defects, although this defect level corresponds to only a 4.5 sigma level. Motorola set a goal of Six Sigma for all of its manufacturing operations, and this goal became anembodiment for the management and engineering practices used to achieve it.

Corporate incorporation
Over time many companies have adopted this doctrineand in many organizations it is used as a measure of quality that strives for near perfection. For such organizations it’s a disciplined, data-driven approach and methodology for eliminating defects and driving toward six standard deviations between the mean and the nearest specification limit in any process. It has been applied in almost all areas of production from manufacturing to transactional and from product to service.

The principle
The principal objective of the Six Sigma methodology is the implementation of a measurement-based policy that focuses on process improvement and variation reduction through the application of Six Sigma improvement projects. This is brought to fruition through the use of two sub-methodologies: DMAIC and DMADV, which are executed by Six Sigma Green Belts and Black Belts, and overseen by Master Black Belts.

Global reception
Thousands of companies around the world have discovered the far reaching benefits of Six Sigma and many frameworks exist for implementing this methodology. Consultants all over the world have developed proprietary methodologies for implementing quality, based on the similar change management ideas and applications of tools.
