There are a number of reasons why you may
want to upgrade your AC system - to improve indoor air quality, to purchase
a better system, or your old air conditioning system may be on its last legs.
It is important to understand that air conditioning systems don't last forever
- the typical lifespan is about ten years, but as technology progresses, that
lifespan is even shorter. When it comes to purchasing a new air conditioning
system, there are a few key features to look for. Not only do you want to get
the most bang for your buck, but you also want to be pragmatic and find the
right system for your home. Here are some important features to look for when upgrading your AC system.
1. Sound
insulation. You've probably experienced a loud air conditioning system before -
the banging, the whizzing and maybe even the squealing. Indeed, air
conditioners can be loud. This is why you want to look for noise reducing
filters when looking for a new AC system. In most cases, you can ask an HVAC
specialist about some of the quieter air conditioners on the market.
2. Energy
efficiency. This is another important feature to look for. Most AC systems will
advertise that they are energy efficient, but you want to look for some
telltale cues to make sure it really is. For instance, you want to look for a
system with copper coils - these coils stay cooler for longer, which allows
your system to conserve much more energy. You also want to look out for the
Energy Star logo, which will tell you that the system has gone through rigorous
energy efficiency testing.
3. Double stage compressor. A double stage compressor is another feature you want to look
for - it will help cut down your air conditioner's usage by up to 10%. These
unique compressor configurations work in tandem to consolidate your air
conditioner's usage - if one compressor is working too hard, the other will
kick in to balance things out. Not only will this save energy, but it will also
provide the optimal cooling power for your home. These double compressor units
are more expensive, but they may be worth it, especially when it comes to the
energy savings.
4. Long
warranty. A long warranty is important, because you don't want your air
conditioner to break down and then have to come out of pocket to make repairs -
this will start to get pretty expensive. Ideally, you want to look for an
extended warranty - up to ten years. With this kind of warranty, you can get a
brand new system if something happens before the warranty expires.
5. Easy
access air filter. The filter of an air conditioner is critical for blocking
out harmful particulates that travel through the air of your home. These
particulates contain dust, dander and even mold spores. Not only do you want a
system with a solid filtration system - you also want the filter to be easy to
access. In the end, you will be changing the filter on a regular basis, so you
don't want to be forced to take apart the whole system to complete a simple
task.
