How to Clean Mold off Your Roof

In life, some molds are good: blue cheese and penicillin come to mind. However, when mold begins to appear on your roof, it may take more than a salad dressing and antibiotic to change your mind. That mold you’re seeing is actually a blue-green algae that, although being relatively harmless to your roof, looks rather unsightly. Luckily, your roof’s mold issue is one that can be fixed fairly easily with some basic household items. Here’s how to best clean mold off your roof.

First, you’ll want to cover any plants that may on the receiving end of any residual roof treatment. If you are unable to cover them, rinse them before and after the solution is applied with clean water to ensure they are not affected.

Next, use a broom or short bristled brush to scrape away what you can. This will rid your roof of the majority of the mold and leave a larger surface area for a mold-killing solution to do it’s work.

Finally, Spray down the affected shingles with clean water. In a two gallon bucket, dilute half a gallon of bleach with half a gallon of water. Using a spray pump (never a pressure washer as it can remove a shingles grit), spray the shingles, wait 15 minutes, and rinse with clean water. Keep in mind that your local home improvement store may have spray solutions that will inhibit future moss and fungus growth that you may want to look into as a preventative measure.

Cleaning mold off your roof can be an easy and inexpensive task to complete on your own.
