Sifting through
countless decorating techniques and styles to find just the right one for your
home can be a daunting experience. Fortunately, choosing the right interior
design and color scheme boils down to personal preference and finding what you
are most comfortable with. Whether it’s paint or wallpaper, small or big rooms
with little natural light or directly in the path of the sun, there are some
simple rules you need follow to ensure your house doesn’t look like a circus
attraction, but rather your own little slice of heaven.
1. Complement, don’t emphasize
First, you need to
realize that painting a room with more than one color can end up looking
amazing. However, make sure you don’t use more than three colors at the time,
or it’ll end up looking like
a mess. Choosing two bold colors means that the third needs to be neutral
or else it will be irritating to the eyes. If you chose one bold color, then
the other two need to be neutral, with one of them being lighter than the other
for added contrast. Always start with the boldest color first and then choose
the other with regards to the first.
2. Choose the right white
It’s important to
select the white that complements the other colors in the color scheme, so it
doesn’t’ stand out too much. Dimity and Great White have a reddish undertone,
Cabbage White has blue and James White has a green undertone and goes very well
with indoor greens. They can also be used as a bold color and complement an All
White, which has no pigment except white. It’s all about selecting the hues
that work well with white, or with each other. 3. Creating the illusion of height
People with low
ceilings often wonder how to make them appear taller and this is something that
is easily
accomplished by reducing the quantity of contrast between the ceilings,
coving or cornice and the walls. You can also paint the walls with white that
has a similar hue to that of the ceiling, which makes it harder to notice where
the walls end and where the ceiling begins. Another way to add the illusion of
height is using gradients, with the walls being painted with increasingly lighter
tones, coving and cornice even lighter and ceiling being painted with the
lightest shade.
4. Creating the illusion of space
This is a lot simpler
than creating the illusion of height, with the darker colors bringing the walls
towards you and lighter colors giving the illusion that they’re further away.
You can also make a narrow hallway appear more spacious by covering the end
wall with a darker tone than that used on the sides. The same technique can be
used to make rectangular rooms appear squarer. All it takes is to paint the
back wall with a darker tone than the rest of the walls. It’s really that
simple!
5. Creating flow
Adding flow is
nothing more than selecting colors with the same tonal weight. ASAP House Painting Sydney
recommends this being done floor by floor, with the color complementing the
adjacent rooms in the house. A similar technique involves switching the colors
between the woodwork and the walls between rooms. That adds a sense of continuity
throughout the house, with the rooms being slightly different from one another
but still appear connected. You can also make a certain room feel a lot
brighter by using darker colors in your hallway.
You can play around
using these techniques to get just the right setting in your home. It only
appears to be difficult, when in fact, there a few simple rules that need to be
followed and the rest is personal taste. You no longer have to be afraid of
using bold colors not that you know how to complement them and remember, even
if you don’t do it right the first time, it’s just paint, you can simply
repaint it.
