What’s in Your Typhoon Survival Kit

Typhoons are a normal occurrence in the Philippines and it’s always advisable for families and households to prepare and be ready for when the time comes. Before you go through the list of drugstores in the Philippines to know where you should go to get your supplies you should know what those supplies are and what is essential. You don’t want to end up packing stuff that you won’t even use.

Water

This is essential because, one your body cannot function properly if you are dehydrated and two in case of a devastating typhoon this could be one resource that will not come easy. You will need clean water to drink as well as hygienic purposes. There could be a lot of water around but you wouldn’t know what is reliable or not. A good estimate of how much water you should be storing with your kit, at least a gallon per person should be allotted. This gallon will cover the person’s nutritional and hygienic needs per day.

Food

You will need to keep yourself nourished in case a disaster occurs and you are unable to access any electricity or gas to cook your own food. You would want to prepare a 3-day supply, to be safe, of non-perishable food. This could be different canned food, cereals, cracker, anything you can eat straight from the packaging and will not spoil easily. You could also try cooking the canned food if you have some charcoal and fire starters in hand.
First-Aid Kit

You never know what could happen during a storm, but at the worst case that someone could get injured. A fully stocked first-aid kit, antibiotic ointments, burn ointments and bandages are a few things that should be in this kit. Especially if you have prescription medicine you should be taking regularly be sure to keep some of that medicine in the kit. Some nonprescription drugs will also come in handy in case of common ailments.

Light and Batteries

One thing that could happen when there is a typhoon is that the electricity goes out and all the lights with it. One thing you could do is invest in flashlights and lamps. Invest in a good long lasting flash light, candles and a strong lamp. Some companies have different designs and models, others also have built in radios which can come in useful to keep up with updates on the storm. Also, make sure to have batteries on hand for these lights.

Cash

The moment you can go outside of your shelter you want to be able to purchase any additional medication or supplies. In this event, some ATMs may not be operational or credit card machines may not be working. Having some cash in hand will come in handy in case you’re in dire need of some supplies.
Be sure to prepare your typhoon survival kit beforehand and keep yourself updated with the status of the typhoon. Remember to hope for the best and prepare for the worst, make sure that you are prepared for the worst case scenario.

What’s the Difference Between Carpets and Rugs?

Both carpets and rugs are used as floor covers with probably the most obvious difference being in size. Some households use them for aesthetic purposes as well. This leaves us to base our choice according to our specific needs and wants. Sometimes, cleaning these floor decorations can be the ultimate deciding factor as this might also make it easier for you to see which one really suits your lifestyle.

To make life easier for you, here are some key points that you might want to consider in choosing between carpets or rugs. Let’s try to figure out the differences between the two, especially when it comes to maintaining their cleanliness.

Check out the materials used

Both carpets and rugs may come in different styles, designs and forms and each kind should be dealt with accordingly when it comes to cleaning. For instance, with carpets, we normally use a vacuum cleaner. However, depending on the type of material and the kind of cleaning necessary for them, the vacuum cleaner may either be used before or after certain processes.

Rugs, on the other hand, might appear easier to deal with, but could also need some rigorous procedure especially in cases where odor treatment and sanitation is necessary. And this method varies according to the material components of the rugs.

Chemicals and solutions

Different cleaning procedures both for carpets and rugs might also require particular chemicals and cleaning solutions. There are many options to choose from based on what actually suits you, but among the choices are:

     Detergents, rinses and shampoos
     Deodorizers, odor and stain removers
     Dry Foam, defoamers and descalers
Boosters, carpet protectors and dyeing chemicals

All these are applicable to both carpets and rugs, but since environment-friendly solutions are now a thing you can actually explore home-made solutions using regular washing detergents, solvents and even vinegar to clean your floor covers.

Cleaning methods
For carpets, professional help and services might be needed more compared to when cleaning rugs. Here are the most common cleaning methods.
  • Bonnet cleaning – use of chemical solutions, vacuum and an absorbent pad
  •  Dry cleaning – use of powdered compound detergents and is known to be one of the fastest ways to clean your carpet.
  •  Steam cleaning – use of hot water, chemical solution and vacuuming and is known to be effective when dealing with heavily ingrained dirt and stains.
Because rugs can be moved, rolled up and carried easily, good old washing can already do the trick – except when dealing with odor-related concerns particularly pet urines and other stains. This requires a specific odor removal and treatment procedure. In some worse cases, intense sanitizing and neutralizing chemicals are being applied first before the odor can be vanished.
