What's the Difference Between a Sauna and Steam Sauna?

Saunas and steam rooms or steam saunas provide a great way to relax and rejuvenate after a long day. By using high heat that promotes sweating and relaxation, they provide a variety of therapeutic health benefits for both your mind and your body.

Saunas

Saunas use dry heat that's typically generated by the use of hot rocks or a stove. Sauna temperatures usually range from 160 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. The intense, dry heat from a sauna quickly relaxes muscles and nerves in your body to help relieve tension and reduce joint pain and inflammation. This type of heat is very helpful for people who suffer from arthritis and painful headaches or migraines.

Saunas provide a great way to relax the body and relieve stress. Dry heat can also help with sleep disturbances, especially insomnia, because it helps the body to release endorphins through relaxation. Saunas heat up your body to release endorphins; then promote increased levels of melatonin as your body cools down. The result is longer, deeper sleep.

Steam Saunas

Steam rooms or steam saunas use moist heat and operate at lower temperatures than saunas, typically around 160 degrees Fahrenheit, but humidity is around 100 percent. The moist, hot heat from a steam room causes your body to sweat which thins and opens up mucous membranes in your nose, throat and lungs. This is great for sinus and allergy sufferers with chronic congestion or bronchitis, but steam heat can aggravate asthma. If you suffer from asthma, dry heat from a sauna is better.

Another health benefit derived from sweating is weight loss. Steam rooms cause you to sweat by increasing your metabolism. As you sweat, you lose water which usually results in losing a few pounds as well. Sweating also cleanses your body and helps to remove harmful toxins, so it's especially good for people with acne. Steam sauna accessories like soaps, brushes, towel wraps, lights and music systems are great additions for any sauna.

Although saunas and steam room saunas offer great health benefits; make sure you limit your time in both. Excessive time in a sauna can lead to dehydration, and excessive time in a steam room can cause rapid heart rhythms and dizziness. When you step into a sauna or steam sauna; be smart and exercise caution to avoid harm. Know your time limit and set a timer to stay safe and healthy.
